Arthritis is an umbrella condition that includes joint pain,
swelling, inflammation, and reduced range of motion. This
can occur in one or more joints in the body.
Osteoarthritis (OA) - this is considered the most common type and is often referred to as "wear and tear." Occurs when the cartilage between bones deteriorates over time. This increases inflammation, which then increases stiffness (due to micro swelling in and around the joint space) as well as pain signaling (due to increased inflammatory chemicals).
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) - this is considered an inflammatory arthritis. It includes autoimmune components that cause the body to attack its own cells and tissues at an exceedingly high rate. The joint lining is one of the areas that is largely affected, which is why this arthritis can lead to deformity of joints.
Psoriatic Arthritis (PA) - this is under the umbrella of autoimmune and inflammatory. However, the tissues that are more affected tend to be the joint spaces and skin lesions that can happen virtually anywhere on the body. Joint pain and swelling can also affect mobility, activity and general energy levels as well.
