Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder where the neurons in the brain that control movement are no longer able to maintain their function.
These neurons act as a "brake" in the system for movement. The term is called, "disinhibition."
In other words, in order to stand still, the brake must be "on" or activated. If the brake is not being activated, then there is movement at rest, also known in Parkinson's as the "tremor."
In order to stand still, there is an inherent "brake" that is always on in the system. This mechanism is controlled by dopamine favoring neurons in the substantia nigra (specifically the pars Compacta - SNc) which is a part of the basal ganglia. This area of the brain is largely responsible for voluntary movement. Thus, when the neurons in this area die (30-80% cell death rate by the time symptoms are beginning) it translates into what we know as Parkinson's Disease.
What can you do to help fight this process?
Movement is life and this is largely a movement disorder - below are the top ways of helping to stalemate the progression of PD and even reverse some of the symptoms.
-Strength Training & Resistance Training
-Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Yoga, Breathwork
-Dance, Music and Sound Therapy
-Gait, Balance and Coordination Training
-Boxing, Spinning, Drawing, Tracing
The more of these you incorporate, the more symptoms you will be able to combat. If you are interested in learning how to create a specific plan that is customized just for you, reach out to Dr. St.Thomas and he will cultivate a tailor made plan based on your specific history.
